Accounting & Finance

The backbone of every business. These roles keep the numbers clean, the cash visible, and the business financially accountable — from daily ledger entries to board-level reporting.
Job Autopsy verdict
Stable, essential — but more repetitive and pressured than it looks. The work does not disappear, but it does compress — tighter deadlines, leaner teams, heavier controls. The ceiling is high if you combine technical depth with judgement and systems fluency — the floor is steady, but often routine-heavy. This sector rewards consistency more than intelligence. Most people do not leave because they cannot do the work — they leave because the cycles never stop.
Good fit if
Accuracy feels satisfying, not tedious
Comfortable with recurring deadlines and close cycles
Willing to grind professional exams to advance
Avoid if
Need variety and stimulation daily
Expect high-control workload or predictable hours year-round
Get drained by repetitive reporting and compliance work

What a week in this sector actually feels like
Monday starts with reconciliations — but half the data is late or does not match. Tuesday turns into chasing numbers across systems and people. Wednesday is reporting, but assumptions change halfway through. Thursday brings fixes, adjustments, and last-minute requests. Friday closes cycles — until something breaks again. The structure repeats every week, but the friction never disappears.
Common entry paths
Path 01 — Most common
Finance or Accounting degree
Straight into a graduate trainee or junior analyst role. Most large firms run annual intakes. Many start professional exams in their first year, and progression depends heavily on sticking with them.
Path 02 — Career switcher
Adjacent role + professional cert
Move from operations, billing, AP/AR, audit support, or business analysis. Sitting ACCA foundation or AAT papers helps — but ERP exposure makes the route more credible.
Path 03 — Non-finance degree
Any degree + cert progress
Degree subject matters less than exam progress. But employers still care about internships, practical systems exposure, and whether you can survive an ERP-heavy environment.
Note — These are the most frequently observed routes in — not guarantees. Hiring decisions depend on employer, role level, and regional market.
