Job Autopsy verdict
Stable legal-industry entry point with real substance but limited prestige ceiling — good if you like structure, paperwork, and supporting live matters. Frustrating if you want final say or high earnings fast.
01

What a Paralegal actually does

A Paralegal supports lawyers by organizing documents, researching issues, preparing bundles, drafting routine materials, and keeping deadlines from exploding. The work is usually process-heavy and accuracy-sensitive. You are not the person arguing the case, but you often prevent the case from collapsing into chaos.
Matter preparation — Organise files, evidence, exhibits, authorities, and correspondence so the lawyer can work without hunting for basics.
Research support — Pull cases, statutes, regulations, and factual background for lawyers who need usable material fast.
Drafting support — Prepare first drafts of routine letters, forms, bundles, chronology documents, and filing packs.
Deadline control — Track court dates, filing cutoffs, signature steps, and document versions so nothing misses a critical point.
Client and admin support — Coordinate signatures, requests, evidence collection, and routine updates across clients and internal teams.
Note: Paralegal work can be genuinely substantive in some teams and mostly admin in others. The title is broad, so employer quality matters a lot.

Note: The best paralegals are not flashy. They are the people who quietly know where everything is, what is missing, and what is due next.

Deadline control, filing logistics, and document handling still require careful human coordination.
Research pull, summarisation, and first-pass document review are increasingly automatable.
Paralegal work that is mostly repetitive formatting or retrieval faces the highest pressure.
Paralegals who become process experts and trusted matter coordinators remain more defensible.
Note: This role is safer when it includes procedural know-how and trusted execution, not just searchable document work.

4 – 7 years
04

10+ years
Note: Timelines are general estimates. Progression is often constrained by attorney leverage and team structure — many firms do not have a true multi-step paralegal ladder. In firm roles, billable-hour pressure is a major reality that shapes raises, bonuses, and workload. Training quality is highly variable and attorney-dependent. Practice-area lock-in is real: once you go deep in one specialty, switching later becomes harder.
