What a Facilities Executive actually does

A Facilities Executive coordinates the maintenance, safety, services, and day-to-day functionality of a building or property portfolio. In practice, the job is operations, vendor control, and problem-solving under time pressure. When something breaks, leaks, trips, overheats, or triggers complaints, it becomes your problem quickly.
Maintenance coordination — Raise work orders, prioritise breakdowns, and follow through with technicians or contractors so issues do not drag on for days.
Vendor management — Coordinate contractors, review service quality, track response times, and make sure vendors actually do what they promised.
Building inspections — Walk the site to catch issues early — lifts, M&E systems, housekeeping quality, common areas, and tenant complaints rarely fix themselves.
Compliance and safety — Support fire, safety, and statutory compliance processes because building operations are not just convenience — they carry real risk if neglected.
Cost control — Track service contracts, repairs, utilities, and minor capex so the building runs without quietly bleeding money.
After-hours standby — Building emergencies do not follow office hours. Facilities executives are often the first call when a pipe bursts, a lift traps someone, or a critical system fails outside normal working time.
Technical breadth at entry — Junior facilities staff are expected to coordinate maintenance, track compliance, liaise with vendors, monitor costs, and handle occupant issues simultaneously — the scope is much wider than "just keeping the building running."
